About the Role

An established and growing cyber security organisation is looking for an experienced Senior Cyber Detection Engineer to join its technical security team.

This role is focused on enhancing cyber defence capabilities through the development, optimisation and continual improvement of detection content across a variety of security technologies. Working closely with technical specialists across multiple security disciplines, you will help improve the quality, accuracy and effectiveness of security monitoring and threat detection capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Detection Engineering & Optimisation

• Design, develop and maintain security detection content across a variety of technology platforms.
• Improve the effectiveness of security monitoring by reducing alert fatigue and enhancing detection quality.
• Review existing detection logic and identify opportunities to improve visibility and threat coverage.
• Develop processes to ensure monitoring capabilities remain aligned with emerging risks and changes in the threat landscape.
• Support the continuous improvement of detection standards, methodologies and governance processes.
• Ensure all changes are documented, validated and auditable.

Threat-Informed Security Improvement

• Leverage cyber threat research and intelligence to support the development of new detection use cases.
• Identify security monitoring gaps and recommend improvements to strengthen defensive capabilities.
• Contribute to the assessment and validation of detection effectiveness across multiple environments.
• Assist with security investigations and provide technical feedback to improve operational outcomes.
• Support testing and evaluation activities designed to measure and enhance detection performance.

Technical Leadership

• Act as a technical subject matter expert for detection engineering and defensive security capabilities.
• Provide mentoring, knowledge sharing and technical guidance to colleagues across the wider security function.
• Contribute to the development of operational standards, procedures and best practices.
• Support the adoption of new technologies, methodologies and approaches that enhance cyber resilience.
• Assist in the prioritisation and delivery of strategic improvement initiatives.

Collaboration & Service Improvement

• Work closely with a broad range of cyber security specialists to strengthen monitoring, investigation and response capabilities.
• Participate in technical reviews and lessons-learned exercises to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Support service enhancement projects and contribute to long-term capability development.
• Maintain awareness of emerging threats, attack techniques and developments within the cyber security industry.

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Significant experience in cyber security, detection engineering, security monitoring or a related technical security discipline.
• Strong knowledge of security event monitoring, alerting methodologies and threat detection principles.
• Experience analysing cyber threats and applying threat-informed approaches to defensive security.
• Strong understanding of enterprise infrastructure, operating systems, networking and cloud technologies.
• Demonstrable experience improving security visibility, detection quality and operational effectiveness.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively within fast-paced technical environments.

Desirable

• Experience developing detection content across a range of security technologies and platforms.
• Knowledge of threat modelling, attack simulation or security validation activities.
• Experience supporting cyber investigations, threat hunting or incident response engagements.
• Familiarity with recognised cyber security frameworks and industry best practices.
• Relevant industry certifications within cyber security, cloud security or detection engineering.
• Experience mentoring junior team members or providing technical leadership.
